Seniors (juniors, sophomores, and freshmen)

In order to earn 5 credits and a grade of C or better you must do the following:

Complete all eight (8) of the Google Drive assignments with a 7 or higher.
Have a final average of 70% or higher.

If you do not have all eight of the Google Drive assignments completed with a grade of 7 or higher you will not have satisfied the technology proficiency requirement.  Without that requirement being met, YOU WILL NOT GRADUATE.

Thursday, June 12, 2014

If you have completed every assignment...

then check with me, and I will let you know what to do next.

If you haven't checked with me, then you should be completing any unfinished work.

Tuesday, June 10, 2014

If you are finished with every Google assignment, every blog assignment, and all of the coding, you need to login to schoollooop and check to make sure that you have a grade for every assignment.  If you have a grade for every assignment do the following.
This Assignment is only to be done after everything else is finished.
Go here and play The Amazing Dare Dozen until you reach the finish line.  Take a screen shot of your final score and post it to a new blog post titled "I finished the Amazing Dare Dozen."  This assignment is for those that have completed all assignments for this class.  Once you complete this game you will have the opportunity to do other "school appropriate" things on the internet.

My current high score is 1167.

Today's Assignment

Go onto the schooloop website for Back Bay.  Login and check your grades for this class.

Specifically, look at the eight (8) Google grades.  If you have less than a 7 for any of those grades you need to see me to find out what needs to be done.  Obviously, if you have not done any of these assignments, you will have a zero or no grade. All of the Google assignments need to be completed to pass this class.

If you have all eight Google assignments complete, then make sure your coding is caught up.  If your coding is caught up, then make sure all of your blog assignments are done.

In summary, the order of importance is as follows

Eight Google Assignments- complete with a grade of 7 or higher.
All assigned coding complete- all sections up to and including looping.
All blog assignments complete.

Coding

I am not going to assign any more new coding this week.  That means you have the next 3 days to catch up.  On Monday, May 19th there will be new assignments.  By then everyone should be finished with all the sections up to and including the looping section.

If you are so far behind that you still won't be caught up by then, then you need to finish assignments outside of class, so you can catch up.

Coding for Monday and Tuesday

I am giving you extra time to finish each of these sections.  If you are not completing the sections, then you need to use your class time more wisely.  You will have two days to finish this section.

Coding for the rest of the week

I will be teaching math lessons for the rest of the week in another classroom.  The following section is to be completed this week.  You should be able to finish all of this section in less than 3 days.  You should budget and use your time wisely, so that you can get caught up on any missing work.

Monday, May 5, 2014

Coding for Monday and Tuesday

You will be completing the functions section today and tomorrow.  As always with this coding curriculum, if you are behind you need to complete the previous assignments first.  This will be the last grade put into schoolloop to make up your walk-around progress report grade.

Thursday, May 1, 2014

Coding for Thursday and Friday

The section for today and tomorrow is really short.  This section is really a one-day assignment.  I am giving it to you as a two-day assignment, so you can make sure that you are on pace.  Next week, we will be doing walk-around progress reports.  Your grade will suffer if you do not have all of your work up to date.

Wednesday, April 30, 2014

Wednesday Work

Finish any previous assigned coding. Tomorrow, I will assign the next section.  If you want to begin it today, then you may. Otherwise, finish any unfinished work.

Monday, April 28, 2014

Coding for Monday and Tuesday (April 28th and 29th)

The next section is called "animation basics."  Obviously, if you have not finished last week's coding work, then you must finish that first.

Thursday, April 24, 2014

Coding Assignments for today and tomorrow

These coding assignments are sequential, so if you did not finish with yesterday's sections, you must finish those first.  The next 2 sections are assigned for today and tomorrow.  The first one is shorter than the second.  For sure you should finish Coloring and begin working on Variables today.

Wednesday, April 23, 2014

Today's Coding Assignment

Finish watching the 2 videos in the "Intro to programming" section and the 2 videos and the 3 challenges in the "Drawing basics" section.

Blog #8 My Career

What do you want to be when you grow up?

More specifically what do you want to be doing when you are 30 years old?  I wouldn't guess that anyone wants to be working at Taco Bell when they are 30 unless they are a manager or an owner.

Write about your main career goal.  Write about what you are doing now and what you will be doing in the future to be able to have that particular career.  Include at least 2 pictures related to your career and at least 1 link to a related website.

This blog post must be at least 2 paragraphs and at least 100 words.  Title the post "#7 My Career."

Blog #7 Surveys

Today's easy blog assignment is to complete two surveys.  The following survey and one on this site.  Title the blog post "#32 Survey."

For each of the 16 questions, you are going to answer each with a value from 1 to 5.  Then take the second survey and screen capture your results (apple/shift/4).  Insert those results pictures  after the 16 values. Include all the information in the pictures including the values for all 8 intelligences (probably 3 pics- see my examples).

1 = Statement does not describe you at all
2 = Statement describes you very little
3 = Statement describes you somewhat
4 = Statement describes you pretty well
5 = Statement describes you exactly

1.   I pride myself on knowing my times tables (1-12).
2.   I can mentally add and subtract (without using my fingers).
3.   I consider myself a “math person.”
4.   When ordering food at a restaurant, I know approximately what my total bill is before being told by the cashier/waiter.
5.  Adding and subtracting fractions is easy for me.
6.   I can calculate travel time based upon mph and distance.
7.   I use some form of math every day.
8.   I like sports.
9.   I know what batting average is in baseball, and I know how to calculate it.
10.  I know what shooting average is in basketball, and I know hot to calculate it.
11.  I know (can calculate) how many inches are in a yard.
12.  I would be comfortable working a cash register (counting money, handing back change, etc.).
13.  I know (can calculate) how many seconds are in an hour.
14.  I know how to graph points like (1, -3).
15.  I can add, subtract, multiply, and divide any two numbers without a calculator (using pencil and paper).
16.  Math is easy.

Google #7 Resume

Today you are going to be creating a resume for yourself in Google Drive.
Create a new document, and rename it "#7 Yourlastname."  Share with me, misterwalske@gmail.com.  Use the picture below as a guide.

1)  Center your name, address and contact information.
2)  Include each of the 5 headings (Objective, Education, etc.)  If you have not taken any college or vocational courses name the fourth heading "Relevant Skills."
3)  You don't need the horizontal lines to separate each category.

Notice that each heading is in bold and starts at the left margin.  All of the information after each heading starts at the same tab unless it is a further indented bullet point.  Correctly formatting a resume will make it look professional.

The last thing you want is your resume to stand out for being sloppy and/or unprofessional.

Google #5 Letter of Recommendation

This is a Google drive assignment.
Today's assignment is writing another business letter.

Specifically, you will be writing a letter of recommendation.  When applying for certain jobs (usually the higher paying ones) or scholarships you will be asked to provide letters of recommendation (usually 3).  These letters are written by teachers, principals, former bosses, etc.

For this assignment you will be writing a letter of recommendation about yourself.  You will be writing this letter as President Barack Obama.  It needs to be typed in the proper format in Google documents (drive).  Name (Rename) your google document "#5 Yourlastname"   After you have named the document, share it with me misterwalske@gmail.com

Follow this example.  Write this letter "Dear Mr. Walske:"  instead of "To whom it may concern:"

Your letter needs to have at least three paragraphs.  For example the paragraphs could be
1) background information  2) skills/talents  3) accomplishments.

This letter is by President Barack Obama, about you, and addressed to me.

Barack Obama
President
United States of America
1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW
Washington, DC 20500

Mr. Walske
Teacher
Back Bay High School
390 Monte Vista Ave
Costa Mesa, California 92627

You will not be writing in first person "I this and I that."  You are writing about yourself (as the President), but you are not writing as yourself.

Example: this would be how I would write about myself.

I would like to recommend Brent Walske for the Governor of California.  He is a very intelligent and motivated person.  Brent has great problem solving skills and works well under pressure. Blah, blah, blah, etc.

Friday- EVERYONE READ THIS ENTIRE POST

Log in to schoolloop and check your grade for this class.  Any grade that is a zero or less than 7 you need to do/redo to improve your grade.

There have been 9 graded assignments so far in this trimester
(5 blog assignments and 4 Google assignments).

If everything is done with a grade of 7 or higher and you have verified it with me, you can have free time.  THIS MEANS THAT YOU ARE WORKING ON CLASS ASSIGNMENTS ONLY UNTIL YOU HAVE VERIFIED WITH ME THAT EVERYTHING IS COMPLETE.

Any grades that are less than 10 can be revised and edited for a higher grade.  Every assignment so far has been worth 10 points.

If you are finished with everything, have checked in with me, and are interested in extra credit, then you can go here and attempt to finish the game.  Anyone who finishes (there is a finish line) and shows it to me will get 10 points of extra credit.

Google #4 Budget Spreadsheet

Today we are doing one of the required parts (the 4th of 8) of the applied skills portion of this class.  We will be creating a budget spreadsheet using Google.

To begin, you must log in to Google and go to drive (documents).

Follow the directions that I give in class.

Sign in to Google and go to Drive.
Click on Create.
Then click on Spreadsheet.
Change the Untitled Spreadsheet to "#4 Yourlastname."
Click share and type in misterwalske@gmail.com

You are going to create a monthly budget.

Starting with cell A1, then A2, then A3, etc. through A10, you will type in these 10 expenses:

Rent
Utilities
Cable
Cell Phone
Car Payment
Insurance
Gas
Food
Entertainment
Savings

In cell A11 you will type Total.

Then you will select cells B1 through B10 and then click the dollar sign button.  Then with the cells still selected click on the sum button found in the "Crazy E looking tool" at the end of the row of tools.

Now enter in dollar amounts in each of the cells.  The program will automatically add the dollar sign and total these dollar amounts.

Finally, select all of the cells (words and dollar amounts) except for the total cells at the bottom.
Then click on insert chart (There is a button for this or you can find it under the insert tab).
Select the pie chart.
Position the chart so that it is to the right of the cells.

Google Assignment #1 Letter

This is the first Google assignment.  This is not a blog assignment.

This assignment is a letter using the correct format.  You can choose to write a letter to a famous person asking for an autographed picture or a letter to a company asking for free stuff.

Go online and find the mailing address of a company (If you can find the name of someone in that company, that's even better.) that you like or the mailing address of your favorite actor, singer, artist, etc.

After you have found the address information, go to your Google drive and create a new document.

Rename the document "Google #1 Yourlastname" by double clicking where it says "untitled document" and share it with me (blue button in the upper right hand corner).

Make sure that you format this letter correctly.  Everything is left justified and there is a single space between your address, date, the company's (person's) address, greeting, etc. until you get to the end.  When you finish the letter with "Sincerely yours," or "Respectfully yours," double-space before you type the "handwritten signature" and double-space again before you type the typed signature.

In the body of the letter, write about how much you like the company or person detailing the products that you use from the company (at least 1 paragraph- 4 sentences).  In the last paragraph, ask the company if they have any free stuff or coupons.
